East:
Seyðisfjörður is one of the easternmost destinations in Iceland. Just down the hill from Egilsstaðir, which has Iceland’s easternmost commercial airport, Seyðisfjörður is located deep in a fjord.
A ferry runs from Seyðisfjörður to Denmark weekly throughout the year. Season 1 of a popular TV show, “Trapped,” (available on Amazon Prime) is set in Seyðisfjörður and the police (Olafur Darri Olafsson stars as one of the officers.) are focused on solving the murder of a man who washed up on shore while the ferry was docked (not true of course!).
Seyðisfjörður is set at the base of mountains down a breathtaking road (Ben Stiller skateboards down this road in the Walter Mitty movie), is actually a pretty sleepy town with good hiking, good restaurants and some great little craft shops.
Seyðisfjörður:
To do:
Tvisongur Sound Sculpture – a peaceful and picturesque place. We were inside at dusk and it was magical the way the light hit the sculpture. The way sound moves throughout the sculpture makes it even more special.
Hiking the hillsides around the fjord
Blue Church – a pretty sight in town. Also, houses a concert series in the summer months.
Stay:
Lonsleira Apartments – Great location, walking distance from everything. Modern and clean. Sleeps 6. We were a group of 5 and had plenty of room to be together but also have our own space when we needed. Met the owner upon arrival and he was wonderful! Would definitely return!
Eat:
Bistro Skaftfell – AMAZING pizza! Really delicious and cozy. Casual atmosphere.
Dalbotni Station Diner – Good place for a super casual bite. Very much a diner/cafe feel. Cozier than the linked photo suggests.
Norð Austur Sushi Bar – While I haven’t been here personally, I have heard this place has some of the very best sushi in Iceland. Reservations needed. Open summers only.
Stöðvarfjörður:
To Do:
Petra’s Stone Collection – While I cannot personally recommend this stop, I will be sure to visit next time I am in East Iceland. Located in a fjord on Route 1, south of Seyðisfjörður, this stone collection is organized as an indoor and outdoor museum of rocks and minerals. It looks like a great place to stop, explore and stretch your legs as you wind around the fjords of East Iceland. Open summers, it also offers a small cafe to grab a snack or drink.
